Ma Mawi Jordan's Principle Day
Jordan's Principle Day, also known as Spirit Bear Day, is observed on May 10th each year in Canada. The goal is to raise awareness about the inequities in access to health and social services faced by Indigenous children.
The day is named after Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba. He was born with complex medical needs and spent his entire life in a hospital because of disputes between the federal and provincial governments over who was responsible for paying for his care.
Jordan's Principle is a child-first principle to ensure that First Nations children can access the same public services as all other children. The principle was inspired by Jordan River Anderson, and was unanimously adopted by the House of Commons in 2007.
